- Risk Version 3.07
-
- This is Risk, it is based on the boardgame of the same name.
-
- Personally, I reckon you ought to get hold of your own copy of this brilliant
- boardgame as there is nothing more satisfying than watching your opposition
- roll a treble 1 whilst on the attack - something not really achievable with a
- computer version.

- Disclaimer
-
- Although I have thoroughly tested this program, no program of this size can
- be exhaustively tested, for this reason I accept no responsibility should any
- harm occur to important data in other applications, earlier versions of this
- game (not this one) have been known to crash and hang-up the machine. It is
- important to realise that if you are working on any valuable data then you
- should save it regularly and have backups available.
- Aim
-
- The aim of Risk is to be the only remaining player, this is achieved by
- attacking opposing territories. A players turn can be divided into two main
- stages.
-
- 1. FREE UNITS
- 1.1. Region units
- if a player owns an entire region then several units will be available
- dependent on the particular map
- 1.2. Risk cards
- sets of three risk cards (See attack) may be swapped for extra units:
- 3 infantry 4 EXTRA
- 3 cavalry 6 EXTRA
- 3 artillery 8 EXTRA
- 1 of each 10 EXTRA
-
- 2. ATTACK or REST
- either 2.1. or 2.2
- 2.1. ATTACK
- 2.1.1 attack
- You may attack from any territory owned by you which has two or more
- units against any other neighbouring territory not owned by you.
- The attack is carried out by rolling up to three dice (one per
- attacking unit) and comparing these with the numbers on up to two dice
- (one per defending unit)
- 2.1.2 movement
- may move up to seven units - select via menu any time during an attack.
- Note that once selected you cannot go back to perform another attack
- on your go.
- 2.1.3 risk cards
- if at least one territory has been gained on a turn then the player
- gets a risk card, either artillery, cavalry, infantry or triple (or
- wildcard) - see 1.2
- 2.2. REST
- a rest turn consists of placing a number of units onto the map, the
- exact number is determined by dividing the number of owned territories
- by three and rounding up to the nearest integer, with the proviso that
- the minimum to add is three

- Brief History
-
- I initially started writing a risk program on my model B which I stopped
- work on in 1987 when I went to Brunel. Sometime last year I decided to
- convert it to run on the Arc unfortunately I couldn't make any sense of the
- code for the computer player, which is annoying since it used to beat me. If
- anyone knows suitable player heuristics then please contact me, I can't
- really concentrate on it right now. Most of the major bugs are no longer
- present, i.e. it does not hang up after two or three hours any more, it used
- to do this since - I believe - BASIC does not reclaim LOCAL DIM space after
- executing a procedure. This has not been tested on a 1Mbyte machine, so it
- may or may not work, if it doesn't then contact me with some information and
- I'll see what I can do.
-
- Whilst playing you may encounter speed problems this is almost entirely due
- to the sprite map update. I'm not sure how to get round this, it is because
- the entire window is redrawn each time and not just the section in question,
- if you can explain (in simple form, possibly with the aid of a BASIC program)
- how to do this more efficiently then I would be extremely grateful.
-
- Distribution
-
- Risk may be freely distributed provided no profit is made by the distributor
- except for charitable purposes (including environmental groups not registered
- as charities). Also all files should be kept on any copy you give to anyone
- else.
-
- This version is shareware however which basically means that you should be
- feeling EXTREMELY guilty if you have enjoyed playing this game and have not
- registered your copy with me. Registration costs £5.00 (more if you think the
- games worth it).
